In 2022 a local community member popped into our office. She had lost her husband after 60 years of marriage and was struggling with her feelings. She knew how lonely it could be and wanted to do something for others who might be feeling the same way. So… together we decided to set up a Compassionate café that offers a space to people who have experienced bereavement, to run at a weekend (as these are often lonelier times when family are busy).
In September 2022 the first café went ahead with a group of very willing volunteers who all undertook St Luke’s Hospice Compassionate Friends training. For more information about Compassionate Friends see here https://www.stlukes-hospice.org.uk/compassionate-communities/
The Compassionate Café runs every 3rd and 4th Saturday of the month at The Old School Community Centre from 10-11:30am, and there are always homemade cakes, a warm welcome and a listening ear!
